Is protrusion of French rounded vowels affected by prosodic positions?

چکیده
This paper examines whether lip protrusion is affected by initial strengthening of rounded vowels in French. Three speakers produced sentences containing the vowels /i, e, ɛ, a, y, ø, œ, u, o, ɔ/ at the beginning of different prosodic constituents: Intonational Phrase (IP), Accentual Phrase (AP) and Word (W). Using video and Qualisys motion capture data, three parameters (lip protrusion, area/lip protrusion and lip protrusion/area) are compared to characterize the labial configuration, first between [-round] and [+round] vowels, then within [+round] vowels. These three parameters are found to discriminate between [+/-rounded], to reflect some within category distinction and to show speaker-specific labial patterns. Concerning the effect of prosodic boundary, only the combined measurement of lip protrusion/area reveals a speaker dependent effect on prosodic boundaries. Two speakers out of three show a tendency to decrease lip protrusion/area in IP initial position for back rounded vowels (/o/ and /ɔ/) and for /y/. Prosodic boundary effects are discussed in terms of feature enhancement.

Domain-initial strengthening on French vowels and phonological contrasts: Evidence from lip articulation and spectral variation
Domain-initial strengthening has primarily been studied for consonants. This paper examines whether vowels also undergo boundary-induced phonetic variation and questions how this effect interacts with phonological contrast in a dense vowel system such as that of French. The labial articulation and the acoustic properties of the 10 French oral vowels /i, e, ɛ, a, y, ø, œ, u, o, ɔ/ are examined i...
متن کاملRounding and Height Contrasts at the Beginning of Different Prosodic Constituents in French
Variations in the acoustic manifestations of the rounding and height contrasts in French vowels are investigated in different prosodic positions. Four speakers produced sentences containing the vowels /i, e, a, y, ø/ at the beginning of different prosodic constituents: Intonational Phrase, Accentual Phrase and Word. Acoustic cues for the rounding contrast (F2, F3, F3-F2) and for the vowel heigh...
متن کاملThe effects of lip rounding on voice onset time production in children acquiring Hungarian
The goal of this project was to examine the effects of lip rounding on the production of voice onset time in voiceless bilabial stops in children acquiring Hungarian as their first language. The duration of voice onset time in stops followed by or embedded between high back rounded phonologically long vowels with prominent lip protrusion are considerably longer. VOT durations in stops followed ...
متن کاملProsodic hierarchy and spectral realization of vowels in French
The aim of this study is to relate spectral realization of vowels and prosodic hierarchy in continuous speech. The IRISA speech alignment system is used and formant values of oral vowels are automatically measured in a total of 500,000 segments from around 30 hours of journalistic broadcast speech in French. The link between the duration of vowels and their spectral realization (through their f...
متن کاملEffect of Prosody on Vowel-to-vowel Coarticulation in English
It has been claimed that segments are 'strongly' articulated in two prosodic positions: pitch-accented syllables [4, 5] and domaininitial positions [3, 6, 7, 9]. The current study examines the effect of these two prosodic conditions on resistance to vowel-to-vowel coarticulation, based on acoustic data. This study first shows that vowels are strongly articulated at the edges of prosodic domains...
